Technical FAQ
1. There is no sound output from my computer when I run the program. What could be the problem and how can I resolve this?
Check your system control panel to ensure that your sound output is not muted and that the sound volume is being turned to a nominal setting. Check that the latest version of QuickTime is installed in your system. Sound and video will not function properly without installing QuickTime. The QuickTime installer comes with the program installation disk (for Teacher Edition). You can also download the latest QuickTime from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/
2. The video in the program does not run on my PC. What could be the problem?
Check that the latest version of QuickTime is installed in your system. The QuickTime installer comes with the program installation disk (for Teacher Edition). You can also download the latest QuickTime from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/
3. When I run certain activities, I could not see certain parts of the screen. How do I resolve this problem?
This problem was reported by users who use certain notebook PCs and by those whose video output can support multiple monitors. This display problem can be resolved by changing the 'program.ini' file located in the Town4kids program folder under 't4kcontents'. Open 'program.ini' and change the last line <resolution>fullscreen</resolution> to <resolution>800x600</resolution>. Please be careful to ensure the rest of the information is not changed. After you apply this action and re-launch the program, you will notice that some activities will not fill the entire screen but this is perfectly OK and will not affect the functionality of the program.
4. Do I require a MIDI keyboard in order to run the program?
No, the MIDI keyboard is not a pre-requisite to run the program. The program works without any MIDI keyboard connected to your computer. Users can use the on-screen keyboard to play the activities.
5. Which MIDI keyboards does the program support?
The program works with any standard MIDI keyboard (of any brand) as long as it comes with both MIDI IN and MIDI OUT functions. The program does not support MIDI keyboards without built-in sound synthesizers (i.e. dummy keyboards). For activities with option to use the MIDI keyboard, click on the MIDI Option icon. Once the MIDI Option is turned on, the program will assume that users will continue to run the program with MIDI Option on.
6. I have connected a MIDI keyboard to my PC but could not get any MIDI input functions to work with the program. What could be the problem?
You need to check that your MIDI cable is connected properly to your PC and the MIDI keyboard. At the PC end, it is normally connected to the game port that comes with the sound card. At the MIDI keyboard end, check that the MIDI IN and MIDI OUT are connected correctly (if not, you may need to switch the connection). Next, you need to do the necessary software setup in order to use MIDI functions. Go to the "Control Panel" & select "Multimedia". Follow the menu by selecting "MIDI" tab and then select "external MIDI instrument" and click OK.
